Sweet Home schools voters are at the voting machines today deciding on nearly $19 million in construction projects across the district. Three years ago, the district did a survey of building conditions. The school board looked at the results and came up with the two-phase capital project.
There is a $17 million project covering everything from roof repairs to some major work on the high school athletic fields and a second $2 million plan for a major lighted, artificial surface athletic complex at the high school.
Superintendent Anthony Day says a key item is secure entries in all schools.
"Ever since the tragedy in Connecticut last December, we've been really looking to fortify our security efforts, which are strong, but the addition of a secure entryway which prevents visitors from having direct access to student-occupied areas once the school day begins, we think, is critical," Day told WBFO News.
The vote is a little different because the athletic plan can't be built unless the first plan is approved by voters and then the second passes. Day says the artificial turf field would allow many different sports to be played on the same surface with lighting allowing games into the night and use by the entire community.
