6-year-old boy stabbed on Purdy Street, mother in custody

Buffalo Police say a mother and child suffered stab wounds Wednesday morning and the mother is now in custody.

Capt. Jeff Rinaldo said a call came in to 911 just before 8 a.m. by a neighbor reporting a child had been stabbed.

When police arrived to Purdy Street, near Jefferson Avenue, they found a 6-year-old boy had suffered "multiple lacerations" to his body. Rinaldo, in a news briefing at the scene, said the child was ambulanced to Oishei Children's Hospital for treatment, but the injuries appeared non-life threatening.

Rinaldo said police also found the mother with what appeared to be self-inflicted stab wounds. She was put into custody and taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment.

Rinaldo said officers are in the early stages of the investigation.
