An Amherst man has pleaded guilty to starting the fire that damaged an Allentown apartment building.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Brandon Adler, 29, pleaded guilty to arson in the fourth degree for the early morning fire on July 30, 2017.

Adler started a couch in his apartment on fire, which spread throughout the building located at 486 Franklin St. Five people who were inside the building at the time escaped unharmed, but two others had to be rescued by the Buffalo Fire Department from a second-floor window.

The fire severely damaged the second floor and roof of the building, and the entire building sustained water damage. All residents were displaced.

Adler faces a maximum of four years in prison when he is sentenced May 21.
