Police call for witnesses to fatal weekend shootings

Mike Desmond/WBFO News

Three teenagers were among four people who were shot, one fatally, in two separate incidents in Buffalo over the weekend. Buffalo police say they are making some progress and the two shootings may be related. The first shooting, an apparent drive-by, took place on the 600 block of LaSalle Avenue around 8 p.m. Saturday. Shaunice Gamblin, 15, of Buffalo was killed. Davone Wedlington, 16, was treated and released from Erie County Medical Center.

Later that night, two people were shot at a house party on Glendale Avenue. Ashley Kern, 17, of Cheektowaga and Marlon Clay, 20, of Buffalo are both at ECMC. Kern is in serious condition, while Clay's condition is called fair.

No arrests have been reported in either shooting, but Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda says the department does have some leads. He said at a news briefing Monday on the steps of City Hall witnesses need to cooperate.

"We are making progress but we need people to come forward with some information. We believe both incidents were not random, they were targeted events," Derenda said.

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to call or text the city's confidential tipline at 847-2255. Derenda says the young ages of the victims is eyebrow-raising.

"It is a tragedy. From time to time, these things do occur. One shooting, one homicide is one too many. We're working very hard on this case."
