Construction on track for Toronto Pan Am Games

With less than three months to go before the start of the Pan Am Games in Toronto, construction in the city has reached a fever pitch. Despite some skepticism, organizers say construction is on schedule.Downtown Toronto's Union Station has been getting a major makeover ahead of the games, mainly with the addition of a rail link to Pearson International Airport, a project that's been talked about for years, but only needed the push of the games to set it moving.

It's now up against a July deadline.

The city's transit commission and other agencies say it will be finished on time, but they're not saying exactly when.

"When you look at construction, you think wow, how can they ever get this done in a couple of months? We will. To the untrained eye, there would appear to be a lot to be done. But we are working 24/7," says Brad Ross, who speaks for the commission.

In July, Toronto will play host to more than 8,000 athletes and officials from 41 countries for about a month's worth of sporting competition. The games are expected to draw about a quarter of a million visitors.

Critics warn of traffic chaos and there have been delays in some of the $700 million of planned construction. That could hold up test events and has already affected local businesses.

In looking to the future, a well run Pan Am Games could be a major step to the city eventually winning a bid to host the Olympics.
