Canadian leaders respond to Ottawa attack

"This is going to be a huge wake up call for Canada," said correspondent Dan Karpenchuk, who covers news out of Ontario for WBFO. Karpenchuk offered perspective on Wednesday's gun attack in Ottawa, which claimed the life of a Canadian solider and created turmoil within the nation's capital.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper says "Canada will never be intimidated.''

Harper is calling Wednesday's fatal shooting of a soldier at the war memorial in Ottawa an act of terrorism.

The soldier has been identified as 24-year-old Corporal Nathan Cirillo of Hamilton, Ontario.

"Canadians are really feeling this," said Karpenchuk.

The Associated Press also contributed to this post.

WBFO’s comprehensive news coverage extends into Southern Ontario and Dan Karpenchuk is the station’s voice from the north. The award-winning reporter covers binational issues, including economic trends, the environment, tourism and transportation.
