Today marks the opening of the 175th annual Erie County Fair in Hamburg. Gates opened at noon and as part of a food drive, anyone who brings in a canned food donation today to benefit the Food Bank of Western New York will get a free admission.
This year's 12-day fairmarks the grand opening of the new, 60,000 square foot, state-of-the-art Agriculture Discovery Center, which features interactive agriculture-based exhibits.
As part of today's admission, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a musical timeline of classical and pops hits to accompany a slide and video show of historic highlights from the Fair's history. The BPO performance will close with fireworks tonight.
One of this year's special events is daredevil Nik Wallenda's skywalk 1,350 feet across The Fairgrounds on a wire that is 5/8" thick and 125 feet above the ground on August 10.
After Wednesday's opening, the fair is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. from August 7 to 17. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for seniors. Children 12 and under get in free.
