Book examines academic witch hunt of the 1950s

One of the most important court cases about academic freedom in public higher education grew out of actions at the University at Buffalo. It was a case against state loyalty oaths, which local lawyer Richard Lipsitz took to the U.S. Supreme Court and won.

Lawyer Marjorie Heins is releasing her book about the fight over what teachers could do and say, Priests of Our Democracy: The Supreme Court, Academic Freedom and the Anti-Communist Purge.

WBFO's Mike Desmond spoke with Heins about her book.

Heins will be speaking at UB Law School on Monday on a panel with lawyer Richard Lipsitz about the case he won before the Supreme Court.

Mike Desmond is one of Western New York’s most experienced reporters, having spent nearly a half-century covering the region for newspapers, television stations and public radio.
