A Depew man has been sentenced to six months in jail for the beating death of his cat with a baseball bat.

In Erie County Court Thursday morning, Boyd Baker, 52, was sentenced to jail, followed by five years of probation. Erie County Court Judge Sheila DiTullio also ordered Baker to undergo anger management counseling and issued a lifetime ban prohibiting him for owning any animals.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office said Depew Police were called to Baker's Penora Street residence during the late evening of Feb.14 of last year, after a 911 call from a neighbor. Police found the severly injured cat, who died shortly thereafter.

The animal was determined to have died from blunt force trauma.

Baker pleaded guilty to a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals in an indictment against him in February, before testimony was set to begin in a non-jury trial.
