The Erie County Sheriff's Department is reporting the death of an inmate that attempted suicide at the County Holding Center.

47-year-old Lester Foster of Buffalo died at Buffalo General Hospital early Wednesday morning from complications.

The Sheriff's Department said Lester attempted to commit suicide on December 23.  He arrived at the Holding Center on December 22 after he was charged with felony DWI and other related vehicle and traffic charges in Buffalo.

In the early morning hours on the 23, Foster was found by a deputy hanging from the bars by his jail issued uniform pants and shirt.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the deputy immediately cut Mr. Foster down and an Emergency Response and Medical  Team helped resuscitate him.  Foster was then transported to Buffalo General Hospital.

Foster died around 4 a.m. Wednesday at Buffalo General.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office preliminary investigation reveals that all Departmental and New York State Commission of Correction’s policies and procedures, including, the Justice Department’s suicide prevention guidelines spelled out in the stipulated order of dismissal were followed from the inception of Foster’s incarceration.

Foster had a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1989.  Some of his other convictions included an  additional driving while intoxicated charge, criminal possession of a controlled substance; trademark counterfeiting; criminal contempt; grand larceny; possession of stolen property.

The Sheriff's Department says it will not be issuing any further comment on the matter at this time.
