The historic Buffalo Lighthouse will be more accessible to the public than ever before thanks to the completion of a $3.8 million transformation of Coast Guard property on Fuhrman Boulevard.
Western New York Congressman Brian Higgins was at the site Monday afternoon alongside representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, and the Buffalo Lighthouse Association to welcome visitors on the cusp of the Historic Preservation Conference beginning later this week.
Congressman Higgins said timing couldn't be better.
"It's quite fitting that this gateway to the historic Buffalo Lighthouse, built in 1833, opened to the public this week as we welcome the world to Buffalo for the Historic Preservation Conference," said Congressman Higgins.
The lighthouse is the oldest man-made structure in Buffalo that stands in it's original location.
Higgins said the waterfront property will showcase Buffalo in a positive light.
"This new space here at the Coast Guard adds to the transformation which provides another public destination that is uniquely Buffalo and is a timely reminder that we can take charge of our own future by reclaiming our past," said Higgins.
