Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced late Wednesday that he would send 1,000 members of New York State's National Guard to the nation's capitol "to aid and facilitate the peaceful transition of presidential power."
Cuomo said in statement that the deployment could last up to two weeks and that he was responding to a request from officials of the United States National Guard.
"For 244 years, the cornerstone of our democracy has been the peaceful transfer of power, and New York stands ready to help ensure the will of the American people is carried out, safely and decisively," the Governor said.
In the wake of pro-Trump mob violence disrupting the Congressional certification of the results of November's election on Wednesday afternoon, Maryland and Virginia deployed National Guard members to assist.
In a separate statement, the governor called events Wednesday a "failed coup attempt."
