The search is now underway for a new head football coach at the University at Buffalo, following Lance Leipold’s resignation to take a similar position at Kansas University.
UB Athletic Director Mark Alnutt said Friday he was informed that morning by Leipold of his decision to move on, a decision Alnutt says the former Bulls coach called "tough."
Leipold fills a vacancy created at Kansas, after that program dismissed previous coach Les Miles in response to an investigation which revealed inappropriate conduct toward female students while Miles served in his previous coaching role at Louisiana State University.
"It is an exciting and humbling opportunity, and this is a day I will never forget," Leipold said in a prepared statement. "We are going to build this program through developing players, discipline and determination. The philosophies engrained in our programs along the way will be key as we turn this around."
UB, meanwhile, will conduct a national search for its new head football coach. Alnutt is hoping they'll hire their successor within the next two weeks.
“I have an opportunity tomorrow to sit down with our leadership group for our football program, and be able to chat with them, you know, obviously get more information from them,” he said. “Recommendations, suggestions, what have you. I’m definitely open for that from that group. Later on this weekend, meet with the full team just to be available to them and hear from that group as well.”
After joining UB's football program in 2015, Leipold led the Bulls to a record of 37-33. However, the team under his leadership went 24-10 since 2018, earning two first place finishes in the Mid American Conference and three consecutive post-season bowl game appearances.
