On your mark, get set, go! The Buffalo Marathon will be run this year.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo made that announcement during a local visit Thursday, saying the state's sports and recreation guidance will be updated with health protocols to help localities plan and permit races.
"For years, the Buffalo Marathon has marked the start of this region's summer festivities, and this year, events like this one that carry the spirit of community and perseverance have special significance for all New Yorkers who have made sacrifices for one another through the pandemic," Cuomo said.
In its 20th anniversary year, the race will operate at about 50% of its usual capacity, with around 3,600 participants instead of the usual 8,000. Social distancing, face masks and health screenings will be required.
There will be four races: a 5K on June 26 and two half marathons and one marathon on June 27. Runners will start in groups of 200 and individual runners will be staggered by speed.
There will be no in-person award ceremonies, with all results provided virtually.
