SUNY allows baseball, softball games on campus

SUNY Buffalo State
SUNY is again allowing on-campus baseball and softball games, not just practices.

Spring is going to be a very strange sports season for many state university schools, with no fans in the stands and no celebrations on the field.

For many state schools, other than the university at Buffalo, there have been only practices. However,  SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras has eased the virus controls so Alfred State can play baseball Thursday afternoon against Wells College and SUNY Buffalo State can play softball against St. John Fisher College March 21.

Malatras said there will be rules, of course.

"There’s going to be regular testing like we’re doing all across SUNY. That doesn’t change," Malatras said. "We’re going to be testing our student athletes right around the time of competition, so we’ll know if they are positive and whether we have to isolate and take extra precautions. We’re going to be requiring masks, not during competition, necessarily."

To get his far, the various SUNY colleges had to work out how they would meet the public health rules in the many counties across New York where the state university system has a campus.
