Sabres trade Conor Sheary, get Wayne Simmonds in deadline deals

nhl.com

The Buffalo Sabres pulled off two deals prior to the NHL's trade deadline Monday afternoon. The team acquired forward Wayne Simmonds from the New Jersey Devils for a conditional fifth-round draft pick. Simmons, 31, is a 12-year veteran who has also played for the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators. The right winger is a two-time 30-goal scorer who had 8 goals and 24 points this season for the Devils. He is an unrestricted free agent after the season.

The Sabres also reportedly traded forward Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Czech forward Dominik Kahun. Kahun is a 24-year-old winger who has 10 goals and 27 points in 50 games this season. He will be a restricted free agent at season's end.

Sheary returns to Pittsburgh after spending parts of two seasons in Buffalo. General Manager Jason Botterill acquired him, along with defenseman Matt Hunwick, in the summer of 2018 for a fourth-round draft pick. Rodrigues had requested a trade earlier this season.

With two wins this past weekend, the Sabres have won five of their last six games to climb within six points of a playoff spot. They next play Wednesday night in Colorado, the first in a four-game road trip.
