Western New York Girls in Sports Day is coming to Niagara County. The first will be held Saturday.
Niagara University is hosting the event, with students helping make it all work. The program is hoping to attract 250 girls being given a chance to try out all of the sports on campus, by working with students from Niagara and Niagara County Community College.
NU, United Way of Niagara County, the Girl Scouts, Women United and Niagara Falls Boys & Girls Club are putting it all together, with money from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation. NU President Fr. James Maher said sports teach skills.
"The ways in which being on a team competing really helps young women grow," Maher said. "Learning to overcome difference, being resilient, working as a team, learning to mesh diversity and different perspectives into one common outcome, together."
There will be lunch. For those who cannot get there on their own, buses will be available from four parts of the county. The Niagara Falls school system is also arranging buses so city students can get that chance to learn a sport.
