Elma native Jake Kaminski goes for the gold again at the 2016 summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, beginning with a ranking round in his team sport of archery Friday morning. Kaminski, who currently lives in Florida, is one of three U.S. archers on the men's Team USA.
This is his second trip to the Olympics, after failing to win gold in 2012. Kaminski won a team silver medal with Brady Ellison in 2012. Also competing for Team USA this year is first-timer Zach Garrett.
Currently ranked 25th in the world, Kaminski won golds at the 2013 world championship and Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games, as well as the 2012 world indoor championship and 2010 world cup final (in mixed team). He also earned individual gold at the 2010 Pan American Championships.
The U.S. women did not qualify a full Olympic team for Rio and therefore, only have one Olympic spot. Mackenzie Brown, currently ranked fourth in the world, won the women's competition at the U.S. Olympic archery trials to secure the Olympic berth.
The opening ceremony for the 2016 summer Olympic Games is Friday evening. Other Western New Yorkers WBFO will be following include West Seneca's Matt Anderson, whose Team USA vollyball plays its first match Sunday against Canada. Fredonia native Jenn Suhr seeks her second gold medal in women's pole vault August 19. The schedule for synchronized swimming, in which Kenmore native Anita Alvarez is competing, is expected to be posted soon.
