Sabres fans were on "Babwatch" Wednesday, awaiting word on whether celebrated Red Wings coach Mike Babcock would be coming to Buffalo to coach the blue and gold. Ultimately it wasn't meant to be, as Babcock instead took a job north of the border with Buffalo's biggest rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Buffalo was among the finalists for Babcock's services and it is believed Sabres owner Terry Pegula offered him a large contract.
Babcock has gained a reputation as one of hockey's best coaches over the past decade, winning a Stanley Cup and two Olympic gold medals. He visited Buffalo last week to meet with Sabres brass. The team fired head coach Ted Nolan at the end of this past season.
