At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Buffalo Bills Head Coach, Rex Ryan spoke about the team’s main concern, and defended the choice to add Richie Incognito to the lineup.
Ryan says figuring out who will fill the team’s quarterback position is his number one priority. Ryan spoke on the potential for free agent Quarterback Josh McCown and others to fill the position.
“You know it’d be nice to get somebody like that. I’m not saying that we have that situation right now. I’m excited about E.J. Manuel though. I’ll tell you that much. I think he’s a young man that has some potential. We’ll see how that pans out,” Ryan said.
Ryan says the team is interested in McCown, as evidenced by his visit to Buffalo on Monday. The 35-year old was cut by Tampa Bay last week, less than a year into his contract with the Buccaneers. McCown is reportedly meeting with other teams including the Chicago Bears.
Ryan fielded numerous questions on the choice to add veteran offensive guard Richie Incognito to the Bills. Incognito joins the team after a one-year hiatus from the NFL, following a suspension from the Miami Dolphins for bullying and sexual harassment.
Ryan says he’s confident good things will come from the addition, and says he feels Incognito deserves the opportunity to prove himself.
“And I recognize that there’s several people in our population that will not give this guy a second chance. That no matter what he does he’s going to be looked at a certain way. But I think the majority of the people in our community, in particular, are going to take a wait and see approach. And I think that’s all Richie wants,” said Ryan.
Ryan calls Incognito an outstanding player who, despite the hiatus, has been working out and is in great shape. He declined to share details of talks with Incognito on future behavior, but did say if the Bills didn’t feel good about his presence in the locker room, he wouldn’t have been added to the team.
