The Buffalo Bills have officially signed controversial free agent offensive guard Richie Incognito. Incognito was a central figure in a bullying scandal while he was a member of the Miami Dolphins in 2013. Incognito played for the Bills briefly in 2009, starting three games. His publicly-documented taunting of Dolphins teammate Jonathan Martin caused Martin to leave the team.
The 6' 3", 319 lb. veteran lineman made the Pro Bowl in 2012. Terms of his deal were not disclosed.
At his introductory press conference last month, new Bills head coach Rex Ryan coincidentally said one of his goals was to "build a bully."
Bills owner Terry Pegula issued a statement Monday, saying ""I personally met with Richie, along with Doug Whaley, Rex Ryan and Kim regarding an opportunity to earn a spot on the Buffalo Bills roster. Obviously, we all discussed Richie's past experience in the NCAA and NFL. We are convinced that Richie is prepared to move forward and has and will continue to take the necessary steps to improve himself as a person and a teammate. Following discussion with the rest of the coaching staff, we as an organization will provide him with the opportunity to do so."
