The Buffalo Bills have fired Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey after three losing seasons. The news was announced in a one-sentence e-mail late Monday morning:

The Buffalo Bills today are announcing that Chan Gailey has been relieved of his duties as the team’s head coach.

In a brief and emotional statement to the media Monday, Gailey confirmed that the entire coaching staff has been relieved of their duties. That includes defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt. Gailey spoke for about a minute-and-a-half and did not take questions.

The fate of general manager Buddy Nix, who hired Gailey in 2010, is still unknown.

The Bills wrapped up a 6-10 season by beating the New York Jets Sunday afternoon by a score of 28-9.

Gailey finished with a 16-32 record in his three seasons. He expressed gratitude to the Bills organization for the opportunity and said he understands the decision.

"I understand this is a business [and] we didn't get the job done. I've been called two other times to get things turned around. I was able to do it [but] we weren't able to get this one done soon enough, and I understand that completely," Gailey said.

Gailey, 60, praised the passion of Bills fans in an emotional statement at One Bills Drive.

"I want to thank the fans. Great Buffalo fans. Great football town. These are loyal, loyal fans," Gailey said. "I think that the next staff will have a great opportunity for success and to make this another great football franchise."

"This will probably be...the first place that's ever fired me that I'll pull for."

The Bills have missed the playoffs for 13 consecutive seasons, the longest active streak in the league.
