Born and raised in the city, Buffalo Rising contributor Vilona Trachtenberg possesses "a lot of pride for Buffalo." When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the region, Trachtenberg worked to highlight some of the many community efforts aimed at lifting spirits and helping healthcare workers.
From high schoolers delivering sucker bouquets to nurses to Just Buffalo Literary Center's Sidewalk Poetry campaign to the BPO's inspiring stay-at-home performance of Stravinsky's "The Firebird," Trachtenberg sees a common theme in her stories: "People in Buffalo are really stepping up."
