Buffalo Spree is celebrating its 50th anniversary. It started in 1967 as a literary magazine that was published quarterly. Today, Buffalo Spree is a city-centric monthly. In this week's Press Pass with WBFO's Mark Scott, Spree editor Elizabeth Licata says she and her writers have witnessed Buffalo's transformation.

Elizabeth shares how she arrived at Buffalo Spree shortly after the late Larry Levite purchased the magazine in 1998. She notes the management team is largely female and that it's now a woman-owned publication under the leadership of Levite's widow, Sharon.

Elizabeth also notes other milestones this year, including the Kenan Center's 5oth anniversary and Canada's 150th. Mark adds to this discussion with his own personal milestone. This week marks 40 years since he became a full-time radio broadcaster and shares the utterly forgettable song that he played on his first radio show on Olean's WMNS on June 23, 1977.

Buffalo Spree will celebrate its 50th anniversary, plus the release of the 2017 Best of Western New York, at a party at the new Hotel Henry at the recently-restored Richardson complex on July 21.

The July issue will be released this week. Elizabeth says it's all about summer in Western New York. The issue release party is Wednesday (6/21), 5:30pm at the 20th Century Club.
