Former New York state Senator and Assemblymember Cathy Young said Wednesday that she will not compete for the open seat in the new 23rd Congressional District, which includes the Western Southern Tier.

The area is currently represented by Republican Rep. Tom Reed of Corning, who last year said he would not run for reelection.

Young told the Buffalo News that she will not be a candidate in 2022 because the timing is not right. She said she will continue to focus on advancing economic development and job opportunities across the state through her position at Cornell University.

She also told the News that she had received an "overwhelming outpouring of support" from a variety of people urging her to run."

The redrawn district, which includes some of Erie County's southtowns, extends eastward into Central New York. Republican congresswoman Claudia Tenney of Utica said she intends to move into the district from her current 22nd district seat and run for the Republican candidacy in the 23rd.
