Lawyers for an ex-U.S. congressman say he is humbled and remorseful after pleading guilty to conspiracy in an insider trading scheme and should face no time behind bars.
The presentence submission on behalf of 69-year-old Chris Collins of Clarence was filed late Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
Collins pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to commit securities fraud and lying to law enforcement officials.
The lawyers say Collins, a Republican who was one of the earliest supporters of President Donald Trump, should not go to prison because of his contrition, advanced age and good charitable works. They say there is also no chance he will commit more crimes.
The lawyers called for probation with significant home confinement and extensive community service. Sentencing is set for Jan. 17.
