New York lawmakers have a new proposal for statewide regulations for home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb.
Legislation announced Tuesday would limit New Yorkers to listing a single property on home-sharing sites and prohibit short-term rentals in affordable housing units. The measure would also require shot-term rentals to be registered with the state.
The bill would replace rules that subjected some people who offered their homes as short-term rentals to steep fines.
The two Democrats sponsoring the bill - Sen. James Skoufis of Woodbury and Assemblymember Joseph Lentol of Brooklyn - say it balances the need for home sharing regulations with the reality that many New Yorkers use short-term rentals as a way to make some few extra bucks.
Chris LeHane, Airbnb's head of policy and communications, says the San Francisco-based company supports the legislation.
