Western New Yorkers are remembering former state Sen. Walter Floss Jr. The Clarence Republican with nearly four decades of public service died Dec. 8 at the age of 95. He will be buried Saturday at St. Mary's Church in Swormville.

Born in 1923, Floss attended Buffalo Technical High School before serving in the U.S. Navy. He established a successful insurance business and raised 10 children, before deciding to enter public service in 1950.

He served as Clarence Town Councilman for four years, Erie County Legislator for 11 years, then New York State Senator from 1979 until his retirement in 1988. Floss was honored by the Erie County Legislature for his decades of public service Feb. 13, his 95th birthday.

Family will be present Thursday and Friday 4 p.m.-8 p.m. at the Amherst Chapel of Amigone Funeral Home. His burial in Swormville will take place at 10:30 a.m.
