Debate canceled after Collins campaign fails to meet deadline

Deadlines to confirm attendance for a debate this month between Republican congressman Chris Collins and his Democratic challenger Nathan McMurray have not been met by the Collins campaign, leading to the debate's cancellation.

Organization of a 27th District debate was a collaborative effort between WNED|WBFO, WGRZ-TV, and The Buffalo News. The McMurray campaign confirmed its participation, but numerous deadlines given to the Collins campaign were missed.

Colllins left the race in August after being indicted on federal insider trading charges of fraud and conspiracy, but he re-entered the race on September 17 and began airing political ads. Until then, Republican party leaders were considering alternative candidates to run in his place.

McMurray, the Grand Island supervisor, has repeatedly called on Collins to debate, using the social media hashtag #DebateNate.
