Ed Rath announces his candidacy for 27th congressional district

Ed Rath

Erie County Legislator Ed Rath has thrown his name into the pile of those seeking to represent the 27th Congressional District.

The Amherst Republican announced on Twitter Monday morning that "after taking the weekend to discuss with his family and reaching out to party leaders across the district," he plans "to take part in the formal candidate selection process."

Rath said "it's important to keep this seat in Republican hands and (he) looks forward to making the case why he's the best candidate."

Rath has been a county lawmaker since January 2008 and is part of the prominent Rath political family, for which Erie County's administration buidling is named. His grandfather was the county's first County Executive, his father served on the New York Supreme Court and his mother is a former state senator.

Rath also has worked in the energy business for nearly 30 years and is Vice President at VARO Technologies.

Rath is one of many names on a growing list of Republicans seeking to replace Rep. Chris Collins (R-Clarence) on the November ballot. Among those already expressing interest in the seat are Buffalo developer and former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, Assemblymember Ray Walter (R-Williamsville), radio host David Bellavia and Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw.
