Race to challenge Rep. Tom Reed too close to call

Two candidates in the five-way Democratic primary race for the 23rd Congressional District are separated by less than 30 votes.

Unofficial results from the New York State Board of Elections show Max Della Pia of Owego leading Tracy Mitrano of Penn Yan, 7,022-6,996.

Absentee ballots will likely determine the ultimate winner, who will face incumbent Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, in November.

The other candidates were Linda Andrei of Ithaca (3,330 votes), Ian Golden of Ithaca (2,918) and Eddie Sundquist of Jamestown (1,395).

The district covers parts of western New York, the Finger Lakes and the Southern Tier.
