Marie Cannon has been confirmed as Erie County's new Commissioner of Social Services.

The county legislature approved the appointment in a 9-2 vote Thursday afternoon.

Cannon has served as the first deputy commissioner since 2014 and as acting commissioner since the resignation of Al Dirschberger in late December in the wake of an indictment of rape charges against him.

Social Services employs about 1,600 workers and has a $600 million annual budget as the county's largest department. Cannon will earn over $136,000 per year in the post.

Mark Wozniak, WBFO's local All Things Considered host, has been at WBFO since mid-1978.
