Boston town clerk abruptly resigns

Boston Town Clerk Jennifer Mule has resigned her post, effective immediately.

Mule turned in a resignation letter and the keys to her office Monday.

At issue was a more than year-long dispute between Mule and the town board over whether permits were required for home improvement work on the home she owns with Gary Ballowe. He is the brother of Boston Town Supervisor Martin Ballowe.

The couple was originally notified that no such permits were necessary. However, the Town Board disagreed. The couple was fined $35,000 last month.

Mule also declined to recognize clerks appointed by the Board as her deputies. The town had settled an harassment complaint she filed with the state Division of Human Rights.
