On Saturday, Governor Andrew Cuomo released a proclamation regarding four vacant government seats.

The proclamation said a special election will be held on April 19, 2016 to fill the now empty seats of State Assembly and Senate. The former inhabitants were convicted for corruption. The vacant seats were in the 59th, 62nd and 65th Assembly Districts, as well as the 9th Senate District.

The new election date coincides with the presidential primary date which Cuomo chose hoping to maximize voter turnout and reduce the cost to taxpayers.
