Next week’s election of Speaker of the House is all but a formality, according to Congressman Chris Collins.

The Clarence Republican said he was among nearly a dozen moderate Republicans who met with Congressman Paul Ryan to urge him to take the position. Collins said with his candidacy declared, Ryan is focusing on uniting the Republican conference.

“He says he will seize this opportunity and start working together to talk about our agenda – jobs, the economy, the ballooning national debt that’s approaching $20-trillion under President Obama, and to get some fiscal discipline and common sense back into government,” said Collins.

Collins said the Republican conference was effectively imploding until Ryan agreed to run for the job. Collins describes the Wisconsin lawmaker’s stature in the conference is “absolutely unique.”

“He is the one and, perhaps, only individual that could unite us – the way he has already and will continue to do so,” said Collins.

At 45 years old, Ryan would become one of the youngest House Speakers in United States history.
