Term limits hearing draws minimal response

What if you hosted a public hearing on proposed term limits... and only two people showed up to speak? That's what happened in the Erie County Legislature's chambers.

As county lawmakers consider two proposals for term limits, they hosted a public hearing for each version Friday afternoon.

Only two people spoke in the first hearing. Only one of them stayed for the second, and said the same things for the record as in the first.

Legislators have two versions of a term limit bill to consider. Both set the limit at 12 years. The difference between the two versions is that one would be retroactive, meaning all currently in office would include their years already served as part of their 12-year total.

If one of the versions passes, it would require a public referendum before taking effect.
