Legislator Rath won't run for county executive

Erie County legislator Edward Rath III is the latest Republican to announce he will not challenge Democratic incumbent Mark Poloncarz in this year's county executive race. In a statement issued Thursday, Rath says he was honored to be considered for the race, but after consulting with his family, he says he will instead run for reelection in the county legislature.

"My colleagues and I in the Legislature have a tremendous track record of success during the past several years, but our work to protect the residents and businesses of Erie County is not complete. At this time I believe that my efforts are best focused on the continued reform and improvement of the county through the Legislature’s work," Rath says.

Earlier this week, county Clerk Chris Jacobs announced he would not enter the county executive race. Last month, Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw reached the same decision.

Rath goes on to say he believes the Republican Party has "a number of excellent candidates who are considering running and who have the ability to win." He says he will fully support state Assemblyman Ray Walter, if he decides to run.

Rath's grandfather was elected the first Erie County Executive back in 1960. The county's downtown office building bears his name.
