Primary Day 2013 features contests for Buffalo Mayor, Erie County Sheriff

It is Primary Day 2013 across New York State. In Erie County polls opened for voters at 6 a.m. Among the races of note are Democratic primaries for Buffalo Mayor and Erie County Sheriff.

The most high-profile contest pits incumbent Mayor Byron Brown against Bernie Tolbert, former special agent-in-charge of the Buffalo FBI.  The winner will face Republican challenger Sergio Rodriguez in November.

Tolbert was first to cast his vote Tuesday. Tolbert voted at 6:30 a.m. at his polling site at University Presbyterian Church, Main & Niagara Falls Blvd. in Buffalo.

Mayor Brown cast his vote with wife, Michele, at Canisius College around 9 a.m.

Both Brown and Tolbert will be awaiting results Tuesday evening. Brown will be the at Statler City Terrace Room, Delaware Avenue in downtown Buffalo.

Tolbert will appear at The Metropolitan Banquet Center, 1670 Main Street, Buffalo, to await election results.

Another key race is for Erie County Sheriff, where Democrats Bert Dunn and Richard Dobson are squaring off for the right to take on incumbent Republican Tim Howard in the general election. 

There are four Democratic primaries for seats on the Erie County Legislature.  And there's a ballot contest for Family Court judge.  Polls close at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
