The temporary restraining order preventing the demolition of the historic Great Northern grain elevator in Buffalo has been extended until Monday.
Justice Emilio Colaiacovo made the decision in In State Supreme Court Wednesday,
An outer brick wall of the structure on Ganson Street collapsed during a Dec. 11 windstorm. Its owner, Chicago-based Archer Daniels Midland, last week received permission from the City of Buffalo to tear it down.
But the Campaign for Greater Buffalo History, Architecture and Culture challenged the city's emergency demolition order. Local developers Douglas Jemal and Rocco Termini have joined the preservationists, who all want to restore the 1897 facility. Jemal has offered to buy the building.
It is the last brick box grain elevator in the world, but has been unused since the early 1980s.
