Niagara Square flag-raising marks 50th anniversary of Bangladeshi Victory Day
A flag-raising ceremony took place in Niagara Square Thursday to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladeshi Victory Day.
It commemorated the victory of the Allied forces High Command over Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, and to honor the more than 3 million people who died in the nine-month war.
In a statement, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown noted that the city's Bangladeshi-American community is actively contributing to the city's economy, and is a major force in the revitalization of neighborhoods on the East Side and across Buffalo.
At the time, the conflict gained worldwide awareness through former Beatle George Harrison's "Concert for Bangladesh" at Madison Square Garden in August 1971.
