The Erie County Sheriff's deputy died Wednesday morning in the holding area of Buffalo City Court.

The Erie County Sheriff's Department is investigating the death of a deputy Wednesday morning at the Sheriff's lockup at City Court.

In a release, the Sheriff's Department said the deputy died apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot while alone in a secluded part of the holding area.

Officials were briefing personnel on the event and was in the process of notifying and talking to family members. Grief counselors were being called in to meet with personnel.

"This is a somber day, and we ask for your patience as we continue to physically, mentally and emotionally work through this," said department spokesman Scott Zylka.
