Western New Yorkers appear in DC court for January 6 charges

Office of the US Attorney, Western District of NY
Prosecutors believe the man circled is WNY man William J Sywek, one of four local Capitol Riot suspects who appeared virtually in federal court Thursday.

Four of the recently charged Western New Yorkers were back in federal court for charges related to the January 6 takeover of Capitol Hill.

Charged with a mix of crimes including entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and obstruction, a father and son and two others hailing from WNY appeared virtually in DC District Court today as part of their legal proceedings.

Traci Sunstrom of Amherst, John Juran of Williamsville, and William M. and William J. Sywak of Hamburg and Arcade all waived their right to a preliminary hearing. Sunstrom was ordered to undergo a pre-trial mental health evaluation by Judge Robin Meriweather.

All charges are misdemeanors, and all are under a court-restricted release which includes forfeiting passports and weapons. They’re due back in court at the end of July.
