The Buffalo Common Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve four city ordinance amendments to require proactive rental inspections of single-family and double rental units.
Lead based paint is prevalent in much of Buffalo's older housing stock. The legislation is aimed at improving public health for families that rent homes in the city and their children. The measures are also designed to hold negligent landlords accountable for their properties, and protect families and children.
The amendments will improve housing standards, allow the Department of Inspections to proactively inspect rental dwellings for lead paint and update ordinances on rental dwelling unit registration.
