Buffalo lawmakers propose new inspection for rental units

Reuters
Buffalo’s old housing and high poverty create the perfect conditions for one of the worst childhood lead poisoning problems in the country, according to a Reuters 2017 investigation..";

Two Buffalo Common Council members have introduced legislation to require proactive rental inspections of single and double rental housing units.

The proposal is meant to combat the issue of lead paint in the city's older rental dwellings.

Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski says the legislation consists of four ordinance amendments to raise the standard of living, especially in the Broadway-Fillmore neighborhood of his district. He says fighting lead poisoning, especially among children, is a top priority of his.

Council Majority Leader David Rivera of the Niagara District has been working on the legislation with the city's Law Department and a Council Committee on Legislation meeting will be held to discuss the proposal via Zoom Tuesday at 1 p.m.
