Erie County had more than 400 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, according to County Executive Mark Poloncarz. That represents a sharp increase in the number of new caes than the 234 positive cases identified in the Thursday report.
In a Tweet, Poloncarz called the new number "sobering" and said that he's been informed that there "is not one group or community causing the increase." Instead, he said, cases are occurring in every community.
This week, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has sounded the alarm about growing numbers of cases in Western New York and was set to announce a new micro-cluster strategy targeting hotspot communities in the area on Monday.
