Sewer worker who died at Bird Island facility identified

The Buffalo Sewer Authority has released the name of the victim who apparently drowned after falling into a deep well at its Bird Island treatment facility Thursday.

Darren Stevens, 50, worked for Quackenbush Incorporated, a private contractor for the Sewer Authority. His body was recovered early Friday morning in the Niagara River, not far from the well where he fell in.

In a release, the authority said Stevens played a critical role on many Buffalo sewer projects and offered its condolences to his family, including his six children. The Authority also extended its gratitude to the first responders who responded to the emergency last week.

The Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration is now investigating the incident.
