Catholic Health proposing a new hospital in Lockport

Slated to open in 2023, Lockport Memorial Hospital, a Campus of Mount Saint Mary Hospital, is a $37- million venture from Catholic Health. "The timing is always good to do what's right so we're stepping up to help Eastern Niagara to provide sustainable health care well into the future," said Catholic Health's President and CEO Mark Sullivan.

Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport's current heath care facility, is 84-years-old and is in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings.

"When we were evaluating Eastern Niagara and working closely with their leadership, there were 80,000 residents at risk of not having sustainable health care in the future," said Sullivan who believes his company's proposal will provide a better, more modern option for the area.

"It's really creating the health care network of the future so it's not just about the building, it's about the continuum of care of high-reliability health care Catholic Health brings."

Sullivan calls the proposed facility a "green building" that will be energy efficient and more effective in delivering health care.

"It's not going to be more than one story and it will fit nicely in the location that is decided in the future which is going to be solely based on centrality, public transportation, access to care, ease of access for the EMS providers to move west to Mount Saint Mary's and to move to other Catholic Health facilities, if necessary, and to bring their patients in."

The proposed facility will encompass 38,000 square feet, considerably smaller than the 204,000 square feet found at Eastern Niagara.  The location is still being sought, but anywhere between "17 and 24 acres" will be needed for the build. A larger parcel may be acquired to allow for future expansion.
