College students across Western New York are gearing up to head back to the classrooms, but two local schools already have a COVID-19 case on its hands.
Classes aren’t scheduled to start until August 24th, but one residential student of SUNY Fredonia has just tested positive for the coronavirus.
Fredonia president Stephen H. Kolison Jr. announced the case in a message to the campus on Friday, noting additional students who might have been exposed to the virus are in a quarantine advised by the Chautauqua County Health Department in off-campus locations. In that message, Kolison said in part:
"Even with all the precautions in place, we are faced with the reality that there will inevitably be positive cases on campus.”
Kolison added the school will make testing data, both negative and positive, publicly available on a web page.
In addition to the case at Fredonia, a Daemen College student also tested positive for COVID-19, however that student lives in off-campus housing. Damen hosted a testing clinic back on August 10, which saw over 500 community members turn out.
