The Erie County Sheriff's Office announced the body of a man has been recovered from the east branch of the Niagara River.

The victim went missing Tuesday afternoon while swimming with a male companion around 4:30 p.m. near the South Grand Island Bridges.

Searchers from several police and rescue organizations took part in a search that was suspended after dark Tuesday and resumed Wednesday morning. Assisting the Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Team were units from Buffalo Police, New York State Police, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and Niagara Frontier Search and Rescue.

The body was found about 11 a.m. The Erie County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy and identification is pending.
