A heat advisory is in effect for Niagara and Orleans Counties from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with temperatures in the mid-80s and heat index values in the upper 90s.
Residents can expect today’s humidity and dew point to make the air thick and stifling – something that can be a danger to more vulnerable populations.
“The most concerns are along the Niagara Frontier – so along Niagara County, along the Lake Ontario Shoreline, going further inland more towards Rochester and the Finger Lakes region is real hot,” said Elizabeth Jurkowski, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Thunderstorms are expected to form in the Southern Tier by early afternoon, and make their way to points north of Buffalo and Niagara County by mid-afternoon. A cold front will arrive later in the evening, bringing thunder storm activity to the entire Western New York region.
